The Origin of the Term; Go-Go or Gogo bars
The term go-go bar is referred to a nightclub or air-con bar type of establishment that featured Go-Go dancers. This type of establishments are common in Thailand and Philippines, where the most famous are GoGos in Pattaya and Angeles City. Go-go dancing originates from the United States, and has been most likely introduced from there into the Philippines and Thailand during the American occupation for the soldier recreation. These venues, over time have developed to caterer entertainments for foreign tourist looking for beautiful girls.
The origin of the term go-go dancing goes back to a British film of the 1950s “Whiskey Galore”. This film tells the story of the sinking of a ship loaded with whiskey. The French title of this film was “Whiskey à Go-Go”; go-go being the French expression for “galore”. Due to the success of the film and the snob appeal of drinking whiskey in France, a number of discotheques were given the name “Whiskey à Go-Go”. It was also the time when dances became popular, where partners were dancing apart from each other. Not long after the success of the discotheques in France, they were opened in French style in New York, with the same name as their French example: “Whiskey A Go-Go”. American discos introduced soon a form of entertainment of young girls dancing in the new, loose style, without a partner. The go-go dancer was born.

Gogo bars offer a wide range of beers from local beers priced between 60 to 200 baht and imported beers, slightly higher in prices. You can have draft beer that usually is well priced during Happy Hours even for as low as 55 bhat. Spirits and whisky start from 90 baht up to 200 bath.
It is custom to offer some drinks to the girls offering you their company. Price vary drastically from gogo bars, but you can expect a range of 100 bath to 250 baht. Girls after few drinks will start to relax and knowing you better, they will love to play with you.

A bit of History
The first GoGo bar in Pattaya was the legendary Tahitian Queen A-GoGo that opened back in 1978 and is still successfully in business after nearly 40 years of Rock’n’Roll. Nowadays, Pattaya has more than 80 GoGo bars all over town, and the number of venues still keeps rising. While some venues have been around for years or decades, the less successful places seem to change ownership, names and format every couple of months.
